Just looking at the pictures of this movie this news doesn’t seem that surprising.
The film Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure is now the proud title holder of lowest grossing wide release of all time.
The film, which is some kind of kiddie sing-along adventure, cost $60 million to make, opened on over 2,000 screens and now has averaged $207 bucks per theater. It’s predicted to take in $6 million in its first week and probably won’t be doing much more than that. It has garnered the title of the worst opening of all time.
It looks like John Carter and Howard the Duck have some new notorious company.
I’m actually surprised this movie would do that good! I never heard of these characters. They’re from the creators of the Tele-Tubbies, which is clear. The film…..I guess I’ll call it that….looks more like a low-rent PBS show. What cost $60 million with this flick??? It can’t be the creepy costumes. Although, at least they’re not CGI.
But this doesn’t even look like a movie. It’s like a cheap 1980’s kiddie show you find on an old VHS tape at the public library. Are these characters really that popular to warrant having a big-screen adventure on movie screens? Damn.
The film has cameos by Chazz Palmentieri, Christopher Lloyd and Cloris Leachman, who has admitted she only did it for the money. At least she’s honest.
From some of the reviews I’ve read the film sounds tortuous. The studio is trying to save a little bit of face with its embarrassing box office take by saying it’s the economy that kept people away from going to see it. Admittedly I didn’t see it, (nor do I plan to), but my feeling is that it not getting a huge audience probably has less to do with the economy than it just being a crappy, cheap looking movie that people can smell miles away.
At least it resulted in some funny reviews to read. I would never have even known about this movie except for the headlines its making for this accomplishment. I doubt this extra exposure will help it earn any more money though.
