Some Skyfall News…..

Skyfall cast filming press conference Istanbul

With the production still filming and trying their best to keep as much as possible a secret, any news regarding the new James Bond film Skyfall is tough to come by. Which I kind of like. I’m doing my best to avoid spoilers and getting wrapped up with rumors or reading proposed leaked scripts that somehow fell into a fans lap.

I’ve been waiting four years for a new Bond film and it would be nice to be able to watch it cold and just sit in a darkened theater and let the film unfold. What’s the rush with wanting to know everything? Don’t fans want to be surprised anymore?

The ironic thing about this is I usually crumble when the opportunity to read anything about the film comes up….

This isn’t major news, so those who don’t like spoilers no need to worry. I don’t want to be the one who ruins the movie for you. There are plenty of places you can go for that!

This was simply from a press conference in Istanbul where Skyfall is filming. Director Sam Mendes was joined by Daniel Craig and members of the cast to talk about Skyfall and field questions from the press.

Mendes reiterated the fact this 007 adventure will be a journey into the conflicted psyche of Mr. Bond. Maybe they want to prepare general audiences for this idea too. Bond won’t be the unflappable secret agent that most of the series has presented. This ain’t Roger Moore walking around looking debonair in a series of freshly pressed suits never sweating.

Although this really shouldn’t be  shock if you’ve seen Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. They’re not suddenly going to shake the tone that those films had.

“Some people sometimes forget in the cliche of Bond, which is the international playboy, and someone who’s always untroubled, and almost never breaks a sweat, that actually what (Fleming) created was a very conflicted character” said Mendes.

The latter Bond novels, Mendes says Bond suffered from a “combination of lassitude, boredom, depression, difficulty with what he’s chosen to do for a living, which is to kill. That makes him a much more interesting character, and some of those things are explored in this movie, because Daniel as an actor is capable of exploring them.”

I find this pretty interesting. It’s almost like what Pierce Brosnan’s tenure as Bond was meant to do. At his first press conference after being cast, Brosnan stated how they were going to explore the demons the character had within him. However, when the films came out despite the promises of a deeper examination of Bond it was more like superficial attempts and were quickly dropped in the films. The closest we got was Brosnan brooding on a beach in GoldenEye.

Oh, but there will still be some time for romance in Skyfall i.e., sex!

When Craig was asked about Bond’s love life in Skyfall he simply said, “It’s very rich. We’re making a Bond movie, so that kind of speaks for itself.”

Some things won’t change.

Skyfall is set for release on October 26 in Britain and worldwide shortly there after.
