It’s Tom Cruise vs James Bond! The Mission: Impossible films have often been compared to the 007 films. Here’s a video that highlights the similarities between them.

Since 1996, Tom Cruise has starred in eight entries of the Mission: Impossible film series. The big-budget adaptation of the television show, resembles less the original show and has become more a big-budget stunt extravaganza showcasing Cruise’s dedication of performing dazzling stunts.

Comparisons between the Mission: Impossible films and the James Bond series were inevitable. Fans have debated which have done the big-budget action spy genre better. Films and sequences have been compared, put up against each other and inevitably similarities have cropped up between the adventures of Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and 007.

Oddly enough, in some instances a Mission: Impossible film was released the same year as a Bond film, which has made making comparisons between the two even more inevitable.

Mission-Impossible-Bond-film-release-date-comparisonIt is pretty impressive when you look at both series’ side by side and the longevity that Cruise has had. Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has continued his M:I adventures throughout two Bond actor tenures. He began one year after Pierce Brosnan made his debut as 007 in 1995. Through seven subsequent M:I films, Cruise has lasted longer through Brosnan’s entire tenure AND through Daniel Craig’s – who has the record as the actor who has played Bond the longest from 2006 to 2021.

It’s pretty amazing when you think about it. Cruise was 34 when he first played Ethan Hunt. By the time Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, the eighth and said to be the last M:I film Cruise will star in, is released, he will be 63! Not to mention there has been zero progress on the future of the Bond films currently and it’s come to a standstill.

Setting aside Cruise’s endurance, the Mission: Impossible and Bond films have drew comparisons by fans. It seems natural since they are both in the same genre. So there’s been several stunts, sequences and elements that fans have pointed to the similarities between the two franchises.

Are they a homage, just coincidences, outright stealing or desperate stretching of this whole comparison argument and it’s completely ridiculous to compare Tom Cruise and James Bond?

Well, here’s a side by side comparison video I made entitled ‘Tom Cruise vs James Bond’ that highlights similarities between the Mission: Impossible and the Bond films.
