Cowabunga dude! Turtle fans finally get their wish!
After being such a fixture throughout most of the 1980s appearing in comic books, television and selling A LOT of toys, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles finally get a big-screen movie of their own!
Four brother turtles Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Donatello have mutated into intelligent creatures thanks to exposure to toxic waste. They then end up getting trained by a very special rat in the ways of martial arts!
While spending most of their time in the sewers beneath New York City, they meet reporter April O’Neil (Judith Hoag) who has wandered into the dangerous sites of the Foot Clan, an evil ninja clan led by the mysterious and lethal Shredder who is corrupting the youth of the city and has kidnapped their beloved mentor Splinter.
Teaming with street vigilante Casey Jones (Elias Koreas) the four turtles do battle with the clan, protect April, try to save the city and eat a lot of pizza!
The film was a huge hit at the time of its release, thanks in large part to the popularity of the Turtles, a big marketing blitz and the impressive work by Jim Henson and his Creature Shop bringing them to life. Perhaps the voice work of Corey Feldman also helped.
I take a look at the Turtles big-screen debut – 1990-s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
